Magazine Design in partnership with Heidelberg USA
For our Publication Design class, our last project consisted of created a 12-page magazine that will be printed by Heidelberg USA, who created the project description and rubric for us.
Objective
To create a high-quality magazine design for professional printing by Heidelburg USA
Kennesaw State SOAAD partnered with Heidelberg in Spring 2024 with Graphic Communication Students to collaborate on our project to create packaging design to attain real-world experience in Design-to-Print processes.
Partnership
I was bouncing around different concepts for this project as we only had a quick 1 1/2-week turnaround. I wanted to make an image heavy magazine, and this is where I decided to go with National Geographic.
The Idea
For one of the requirements of this project, we needed to incorporate a gloss effect using silver and a CMYK color. Since Nat Geo is famous for their yellow border on magazines, I wanted to create a “Special Edition” that consisted of a silver border. This creates a sense of uniqueness and in turn, makes it more premium.

On the back and the Intro of the magazine, there are synopses which were created by AI. This is turn, helped create an engaging intro on short time constraints but also helps me learn about the benefits of AI within Design instead of it being a burden.

The Final Product
The fourth geographical marvel discussed in the magazine: Mount Fuji, in Japan. The photo used is meant to show the sheer size of the mountain even from a distance.
The Netherlands section is nice and organized, which resembles the tulip fields discussed in the page.
The first wonder of Earth discussed in the magazine is Greenland, the land of Ice and Snow. I experimented more with this spread but I was limited by the image as the white body text disappears with the blue background of the photo. So, I resorted to text blocks.
This is the beginning of the magazine, meant to immerse you within this journey of discovering earth's most beautiful creations. Each section has a different typographical treatment in order to give each section its own personality.
This spread is different from the rest, as I wanted to give this page an infographic section, to teach the readers about the hot springs if they haven't already. I want to create a page like this for all of the sections in the near future.
